focus scientists. Over time, memory has often being defined and restricted to one-dimensional aspect of learning ''Recalling'', meanwhile, focuses on attending, learning, linking, remembering, and using the thousand pieces of knowledge and skills we encounter constantly. For educators, memory is the only evidence that something or anything has been learned. Memory is extremely important to educators, not only for them personally as they age and worry about failing memory, but, most important, for the role that memory plays in the teaching/learning process.
Of the number of theories of memory, the most common are the information-processing explanations,
including the newer neural-network or connectionist approaches. Memory is not only a solitary system that depends on one neuroanatomical circuit but a multiple of memory system that capable of working indepently of one another. The multiple system models have been classified into two major groups, declarative or explicit memory and non-declarative memory.
The declarative memory is controlled by intention, consciousness and flexibility and can be enhanced through mnemonics devises to recall information. The defect in declarative memory e.g. recalling the name of an old friend, remembering a list of items to pick up at the store, remembering information for a test, learning a phone number, and recalling your
ATM password is caused by damage to the hippocampus and frontal lobes of the brain; it is also decline as human being ages. The subtypes of declarative memory are working memory, semantic memory, and episodic memory. Meanwhile, Non declarative memory/implicit memory is a memory system that influences our current perceptions and behavior without our knowledge, awareness, or intention.
Working memory is where information is being held and processed mentally, It is where we try to make sense of a lecture, understand a textbook passage, or solve a problem. Working memory is the component that probably does most of the processing, or "work," of the memory system. Limited in capacity and duration, easy loss of information and always screens information that comes into it.
It is human nature to be forgetful, in fact it is even hereditary, according to the saying of Arabs “he is only called man (insaan) because of his forgetfulness”. Although, forgetfulness varies among individuals; some may be forgetful than other.
To enhance memory; the following are some tips:
1) Avoidance of sin and aetrities; ansegnane of which results in bad memory and inability to retain knowledge. Meanwhile; the darkness of gin and the light of knowledge cannot er-emits. To know how effective this is, try and read up the story Imam al-shaafi'ee about his bad memory.
2) Incesant remembrance of Allah by charity Adkhar, tasbee, tahmeed, tahheel and takbeer. If you want a good memory; ark Al-Mujib.
3) Be selective in eating, don't eat too much. A well balanced diet is beneficial to keep your memory at its best. A recent study in France has found that use of Olive oil improves visual memory and verbal fluency. The virtue of the olive is also mentioned in the Qur'an (95:1). Fords that attain high omega- 3 content, such as salmon, are also important for the memory and brain function. More as the brain needs adequate sugar and vitamins that will naturally be in you diet. (if it's not, try honey, dates, blueberries and almonds). Too much acidic food in is one of the causes of laziness and weak memory.
4) Thijaamah (cupping) of the head reduces forgetfulness and enhance memory.
5) Physical exercise, especially aerobic ones, are beneficial to keep the mind alert and healthy, if you can't do aerobic exercise, the food hears in that a moderate amount of walking on daily basis keep the mind healthy too.
Brethren in faith: Treat your brain as a muscle- To keep it fit and agile; it is a must to use it.
Reading books, memorizing Quran, memorizing beneficial knowledge (Hadith, etc), and prayer are all the best ways for Muslims to exercise their mind.
